Piccini 1882

Gold Collection: the treasure chest of Italian wine

Although the collection has expanded over the years to include many other wines, Collezione Oro has its roots in the heart of Tuscany, among the rolling hills of Chianti, where the flagship of the line was born: the Chianti Riserva. This wine encapsulates the deep love and passion the Piccini family has always had for this land, which has been home to the family estate for generations.

Tuscany and wine share a bond deeply rooted in the region’s history, culture and traditions. This land, cradle of the Renaissance and home to great artists, poets and thinkers, has developed a unique relationship with wine over the centuries, to the point that it has become not only one of its gastronomic treasures, but also a symbol of its cultural identity.

Gold Collection thus becomes the home of the great Tuscan appellations, with the ambition of retracing the milestones in the history of Tuscan wine and the Piccini family. The name itself(Gold Collection in English) recalls one of the passions of Angiolo Piccini, founder of the wine dynasty in 1882. Angiolo came from an ancient merchant family that for centuries had traveled far and wide across the Old Continent trading textiles.

Thanks to the cloth trade, the family prospered, amassing a small fortune, part of which Angiolo’s father, Serafino, invested in the purchase of some of the most prestigious bottles he had discovered during his travels in Europe. This collection, as he called it, was his Gold Collection, which he jealously guarded in the family cellar.

One day, young Angiolo ventured into the cellar in search of brocade to fulfill an order from an American customer. While rummaging through the fabric supplies, he noticed an unusual trunk. Intrigued, he interrupted his search. He knelt down and ran his hand over the lid of the trunk, dwelling on the golden studs that adorned it. Eventually, curiosity got the better of him. After looking around to make sure he was not seen, he opened the trunk.

Inside, he discovered his father’s Gold Collection, containing some of the finest bottles in Europe. Just then, the cellar door swung open, and Serafino ‘s silhouette appeared against the light. Fearing a rebuke, Angiolo hurriedly closed the trunk again. However, Serafino, with a fatherly look, approached his son, delighted by his curiosity and eager to share that treasure with him. Indeed, he opened the best bottle of his Gold Collection to toast together with Angiolo.

For the young man it was a revelation, a true epiphany. With that sip, he discovered his passion for wine. It was at that precise moment that the spark was ignited that would lead him, only a few years later, to found the Piccini winery in 1882.

In tribute to the wines that ignited Angiolo’s passion and laid the foundations of the winery, Mario Piccini has dedicated his own Gold Collection, collecting the finest Tuscan wines to honor his family’s greatest treasure.
